Lime Green Scene

Good Morning,

Sunday I spent all day pressing and pressing the rows to the lime green quilt blocks which I just say on the EQ6 pattern was called the "Road to Oklahoma" block. I pressed the individual rows and assembled them into blocks and pressed some more. I sewed the blocks into quilt rows and pressed some more. I think you get the picture. However, when I was done pressing and trimming the blocks, I looked at my favorite pressing tool (Mary Ellen's Best Press) and saw that my newly received Cherry scented bottle was 3/4 gone. I think I need to buy the gallon refills!!

Finally, after all the pressing, I had my quilt top center. It large to me. I guestimate it's 60 x 72 without borders so far. It's even too large to hang in my entry way for photos. So here is the end product. I still have to iron the quilt assembly now so I may just use the rest of the best press.
So now I'm trying to determine what I want to put in the blank squares. Do I want to applique or embroider? I played around last night with my graphics program and put some fake applique butterflies on the quilt. Here's some idea of what it would look like:

Coupon Shopping & Border, Binding, & Backing Fabric

I live pretty close to both Joann's and Michael's, two of my favorite craft shops. I'm always collecting coupons from there. I just wanted to share what I found yesterday and was able to purchase with one of their 50% off one item coupons. The hard part for me for using the coupons is of course getting out of the store with only one item :-)

Michael's - New Quilting Ruler

June Tailor Perfect Half-Square and Quarter-Square Triangles ruler. I saw this youtube posting on another blog recently and was interested in getting one but didn't want to pay the $19.99 average seen online. Of course it would have been better if I had found it BEFORE I started the Lime Quilt.

I was surprised to find this ruler at Michael's and it was only priced at $14.99. Then, I used my 50% non sale item coupon. So, I'm happy with my first bargain.

Joann's - Mid-size Omnigrid

My second stop was at Joann's where I finally found and purchased the Omnigrid mid size iron/cutting board combo. I have the larger size, and the small square size but was never able to locate the 8 3/4 by 11 3/4" size. Finally found it at Joann's and not on sale. So, the $25.99 price went down to $13 for me. Love it for traveling. This will come in handy this coming weekend when I may complete some pressing. Here's a link to what it looks like. It has the cutting board on one side and the pressing on the other.

Border, Binding, Backing fabric for the Breast Cancer Warrior Quilts

I also found the border, binding, and backing fabric I'm going to use for the Breast Cancer Warrior Pink quilts. Do you have any idea how many shades of pink there are? The shades don't photograph very well either.

For today, I'm going to spend time assembling the Lime Green Quilt. Hopefully, I'll finish assembling the Quilt top today.

Rainy Days make for great Quilting Progress!

Rain, rain, rain... That's OK, all the more time to quilt in the evenings since we are not out enjoying the sunshine. I was able to take all the lime quilt blocks and assembled them into rows for the blocks since this past Tuesday. After that, I ironed all of them and then put the rows together to finish all of the blocks. That's a lot of blocks (26). So, now I'm thinking I'll have the quilt top assembled by the end of this weekend. Next weekend I'll be away so no sewing then.

When I was done with putting the block rows together, I was surprised to find that I have soooo many blocks left over. What was I thinking, was I that off on my calculations or did I just cut extra strips and kept cutting the squares :-) I always try to cut a few more to take the place of the rejects but this was ridiculous...

So, on to "Plan B" for my over abundance of blocks. I'm going to take them with me next weekend to iron so that I can get them ready to try and make a folded star square pillow case. Here's a rendering of what I imagine it will look like. I don't know how close I will be but it will allow me to still craft while I'm away. You watch, I'll end up not having enough blocks and will need to cut some more :-)

Half Square Triangle Marathon

Hello, I had such a productive sewing weekend. Since hubby works most weekends, it's the days when I can dedicate some time to sewing. I spent most my time between the two quilts I'm working on. The Lime Quilt and the first of the Breast Cancer Warrior Quilt tops.

Lime Quilt Status

I spent many hours preparing all of the half square triangles on the quilt. I figured there are 60 such blocks in the quilt. So, I took the time to stencil out all the sewing lines on the squares. I didn't mind this because it was also a good time to catch up on some TV too. Here's a look at the block markings in progress

From there, of course it was all that pressing and sizing up the squares and snipping all the edges. Sometimes I forget all the prep-work that goes into making one of these quilts :-). Next thing I knew, several hours went by and I was still just preparing the half square triangle blocks. But, I did finish them all!! yeah!! Here is just one stack.

Once these were done, I started assembling more of the quilt blocks. I ended up completing 7 blocks sewn, ironed and trimmed to the 12" size. So, I exceeded my goal of one block per day. With the rest of the blocks, I decided I'm going to create all the rows first and then complete all my ironing in one fail swoop. So, I'm still working on sewing the rows.

Breast Cancer Warrior Quilt Status

I was able to complete the first quilt top this weekend as well. Once I started it, I couldn't stop until it was finished. It really is great seeing / reading all the messages. Next step, determining borders and fabric.

Only one entry in my book giveaway so an easy winner! So, KarenO if you would email me your address, I'll get the books out to you. Thanks.

I couldn't help snapping a photo of my first rose bud. It's so tiny. It opened the next day and didn't last long so I'm happy I captured this photo!

Lime Quilt Block and Breast Cancer Quilt Layout

Lime Quilt Block

I think I'm going to really like this Lime Quilt! Here's one block finished. The block finishes 12" square. The digital camera is having problems capturing the polka dots correctly. It make the block look crooked but it really turned out pretty straight. Now only 29 more to go plus borders. My goal is at least one block per day. It's a slow goal, but, I also have 4 breast cancer quilts to assemble that I volunteered to complete. Here's the lime block.

Breast Cancer Quilt Layout

Below is a trial layout of my first of four Breast Cancer Quilt for the Breast Cancer Warrior Quilts. As members attended the race, they brought or created a square on pink fabric provided or brought their own. Some on white, some on others. Here's a trial layout. There are more light pink blocks than darker and I am OK with the areas of repetitive light pink. These will be taking a lot of my time over the next couple of months. I'll keep you posted on the progress. The green you see in between the blocks is my carpet.

Congrats Pittsburgh Penquins NHL 2009 Stanley Cup Champions!!!

Lots and Lots of Squares

I am finally done cutting the blocks for the Lime Quilt. I think I have extras too. There are 3 and 7/8th blocks and 3.5 inch blocks. I didn't think the cutting would ever end. I usually cut a few strips and blocks in the evening. By the time I am done with work and finally eat dinner, it only allows for an hour or less to cut some blocks. So, I am happy with the progress made!!

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I only like the piecing part of a quilt top. The prep to get there, not so much! Next step, I need to decided if I'm going to go one block at a time or try to assembly piece the half square triangle pieces for the whole quilt first. Decisions, Decisions...

LimeQuilt Status

I am happy to say, I have washed and lightly ironed all fabrics! I should move into cutting the squares today in between yard work! Hard to see but the white on white fabric is on the left.

As I was looking around while cleaning today, it's time to get rid of some of my excess crafting items. So, what better way than to give them away!! These will be easy giveaways since there are not too many visitors to the site. Who knows, you could be the only one :-) So, if you are interested in some free books, please let me know by leaving a comment and tell me what your favorite quilting book is if you have one. If not, what's your favorite craft book.

35 Projects - Quilting Books Giveaway - Ends 6/15/09

I have sooo many crafty things that I would much rather give to other crafters instead of having them end up in the land fill. The giveaways will touch all different types of crafts. Some piddly, some good ones, we'll see.

The following quilting books are from my own library and will be given away on Monday evening EST, June 15th. I will pull a random number and match to comments. I will not approve any postings that I feel are inappropriate. The books will be shipped at my expense by media mail. Sorry, but only US Address entries at this time.

The two quilting books (remember, they are used but in great condition) from my supply are :
  • Quirky Quilting by Tomme J. Fent
  • 90 Minute Quilts by Meryl Ann Butler.

Michael's Online Coupon & Lime Quilt Fabric Status

Michael's 50% off coupon - expires June 15th

I found a link to a Michael's 50% off regular price item coupon good until June 15th. It's printable and states you can use it once a day until June 15th. Here's the link I used it last night and worked like a charm. I like to use them in their sewing/quilting section for batting or cutting mats. These usually are not on sale so it's easy to use the coupon. Enjoy!!

Lime Quilt Fabric Status

I'm surprised to say that both the black polka dot and lime green fabrics are washed and in process of ironing. Actually the lime green fabric is ironed already and the black polka dot I'm thinking of just steaming real quilt tonight. That leaves just to wash the white on white and plain black fabric and I'm ready for cutting over the weekend. Actually I might need a trip to Joanns for some more plain black fabric.

Lime Green Layout

Here is what I came up with on the limegreen/polkadot fabric. Nothing out of the ordinary but I'm anxious to see if the quilt top comes out as planned. Here's the basic block. I decided to add plain black fabric and white on white fabric as well to the quilt.

Once you place all the blocks together, here the anticipated quilt layout. I'm thinking I may try and add some embroidery to the plain black blocks scattered throughout. I'll have to think on that idea since the basic black blocks that result are actually pieced.

When I looked at the fabric requirements for the quilt layout, I compared to the stash I had originally found and I did not have enough green or black and white dot. I pouted for a couple hours until peeking out of the stash I saw lime green. Wouldn't you know it I had purchased the same fabric twice. What can I say, when you like something, you repeat buy! Believe it or not, I had more dot fabric as well. So, I'm ready to go.

Next up, washing the fabric and ironing... that will take a while since I hate ironing :-)
